Sharing is caring!

The prospect of moving house in the middle of a global pandemic might be daunting, but the housing market has kept ticking over through most of this year and a lot of us are ready for a change of scenery after so many months of lockdown.

If you are looking to make the move and make a new start for yourself this year or next, we want to share some of our easiest moving tips with you to make sure you move with ease.

Here are some of the preparation and packing tips you need to know before moving house this year.

Have a clear out

Before you consider moving house, you need to take a look at your current situation and decide what you want to keep and what you want to throw away. Spend a week or so having a huge clear out and this will not only help refresh your house a little but it will make the process of packing up and moving much easier! When clearing out clutter try to be as ruthless as you can, because a fresh new start in a new house will feel even better without all of the unnecessary items.

Pack up your Knick knacks

The first thing you want to do once you have contacted your movers is pack up small items like ornaments and Knick knacks which are not essential for your home until you move. When packing up, you can start weeks ahead of your moving date as long as you leave yourself with the items you need to live your day to day life. Small things like ornaments and vases can be packed with bubble wrap and boxed up ready for moving day, making life much easier for you in the long run.

Consider selling unneeded items

If you have items such as old furniture, electronic goods or clothes – a great idea would be to sell them online. There is no reason why you can’t make some money before you move out and put a small dent in those moving costs! Use sites such as eBay and Vinted or Shpock to get rid of your unwanted things and get some money for them.

Pack up your bigger furniture

Once you get closer to moving day, it is a good idea to start packing up your larger items and getting them ready to go. Things such as your spare room bed, chairs, dining table and bookcases can be packed up ready for moving a little time before you leave. You could even invest in a storage unit if you think it will be quite some time before you get to move into your new house.

Organize cables

Our modern lives are strewn with cables and electronic items, and when moving house you will need to bring all of these cabled goods with you. When packing up cables it is very important for you to invest in cable ties or even a cable organizer to ensure that when you unpack at your new house you aren’t left with a mountain of tangled wires to sift through.

Keep things labelled

When packing up your things ready to move to a new house, one of the easiest things you can do is label your boxes. You can label in a few different ways – by writing down the room as well as the type of contents inside. By doing this, when you get to the new house these boxes can go straight into those rooms and then you’ll be able to unpack them without the stress. No more running around the house looking for a pan or a mug!

Pack up your pets

If you have pets, you’ll need to start packing their things along with your own. It is important to remember that animals – especially smaller ones like cats or rabbits – get stressed in the car. Ok moving day be sure that you wait until the last possible minute to pack them into a carrier and drive them to their new home. Even better – have a family member look after them for the first 2 nights while you unpack things and make the space as safe as you can.

Give the house a clean

Before you leave your old home it is important to give it a thorough clean. Cleaning your old home will be much easier once all of your furniture is gone and you’ll want to bleach the bathroom and kitchen as well as wash the carpets with a steam cleaner. This is not a rule but it is a courteous thing to do for the next people to make a life here.
