K is for Kinesthetic

Welcome back to another day in our Autism A to Z series! Today was another that I initially struggled with and then I finally had to go back to my daycare roots and what I had learned in Early Childhood Education classes. So for us, K is for Kinesthetic. Most of the time, you’ll associate kinesthetic with a learning style and it is one of many learning styles. While Sweet B has a mixture of learning styles, her main two are Visual and Kinesthetic. First, let’s start by defining Kinesthetic: Kinesthetic is the adjective form of the word kinesthia. And according to Miriam Webster, Kinesthia is as follows: a sense mediated by receptors located in muscles, tendons, and joints and stimulated by bodily movements and…

Booking Across the USA: Sandra Boynton

We are happy to be participating in Booking Across the USA and the author that we chose to cover is Sandra Boynton. She hails from New Jersey so that’s the state that we’re representing even though we live in New York. There are several reasons that we chose Sandra Boynton and we’ll also have a list of our favorite books and a mini printable pack for you. Sandra Boynton was a favorite of mine as a child- I loved But Not The Hippopotamus and I remember having a few stuffed Boynton animals (an elephant for me and a hippo for my mom). So the fact that I can now share this love of Boynton books with Squeaker is great. About Sandra Boynton Sandra Boynton was…

J is for Jobs

This was another one that I had some difficulty with in terms of figuring out what to post, but it’s another issue that’s relevant for when your child with autism becomes an adult with autism. So for our next letter in the Autism A to Z series, J is for Jobs. One question that might run through a parent’s mind: What will happen when my child becomes an adult? Now this is something that all parents ask themselves but for parents of a child with autism- well, we’re just not always certain. Before her autism diagnosis, I had big dreams for my Sweet B. I had her future envisioned. And then that all changed. Will she go to college? Probably not. Could she live independently?…

Freebie Friday: What to Wear Today?

Welcome back to another Freebie Friday! In keeping with my theme of free printables for autistic children, this week’s pack focuses on making appropriate clothing choices. This pack can be used for any individual (non-verbal, pre-reader, autism, etc.) who made need a little bit of help in this area. This pack, “What to wear today?” is designed to help your child become more independent. You can also use this pack for a preschooler or toddler who may want to start dressing themselves. You could also use this pack for a calendar of sorts or for a morning circle. This pack includes: – Weather chart pages (When the weather is… I wear…) which feature a typical weather scenario (sunny, snowing, rain) and four empty choice spots…

I is for Intervention

When it comes to autism, early intervention is key. That’s why, for our next part of the Autism A to Z series, I is for Intervention. I was debating if this should be about integration or intervention or IEP or IFSP, and I think that they’re all important to know.   So after we talk about intervention, we’ll also talk about integration in another post. IEP and IFSP will also be covered in another post though I’m not exactly sure when these posts will happen. But rest assured that they will happen. And if you’ve missed any part of this series so far, please be sure to check out Autism A to Z.     Our Early Intervention Journey   Sweet B was diagnosed with…

Is Yoga Really For Everyone?

Yoga has been touted as an exercise that almost anyone can do. But is yoga really for everyone? Do you really think that everyone who owns and wears a pair of yoga pants is a die hard practitioner? I wear yoga pants because they’re comfortable but I also wear them when I’m doing yoga. It took me quite some time to finally settle into a routine and I’m still looking for a mommy and me option so I can get Squeaker in on it too. I’ve also looked into yoga for special needs to see if it would help Sweet B. So with mommy and me yoga, yoga for special needs, yoga for pregnancy, etc… is yoga really for everyone? Or is that just what…
