Simple Science for Toddlers

It seems like forever since I’ve done a School with Squeaker post! Our tot-school this year has been incredibly informal and sporadic. I go off of her lead and her interests but I don’t have set activities or a schedule for her yet. This is based on her age. Yes, her attention span is increasing but she’s also 2. That’s not to say that I don’t do activities or crafts with her or that she doesn’t have access to materials. She does. I just haven’t planned it out exactly and again, I go by her interests. I want to keep it fun for her and I know she’s still absorbing all of the information, just that it happens in unplanned situations. And honestly, that’s how…

Parental guilt is just one of those things that we seemingly can't avoid. But how do we deal with the ongoing guilt that we face as the parent of an autistic child?

Dealing with Guilt as the Parent of an Autistic Child

The time that immediately follows an autism diagnosis can be some of the most difficult and challenging that a parent may ever have to face. In a previous post, I addressed dealing with autism and grief. In this post, I want to address something equally important- autism and guilt. Specifically, guilt as it comes along with being a parent of an autistic child. This was something I struggled with mightily in the beginning and still struggle with from time to time. After receiving her diagnosis, and wrestling with all of the other emotions that accompanied it, I felt so entirely responsible and guilty for what had happened to B. I’ve learned, over time, how to deal with this. That’s not to say that it’s completely…

Have you thought about starting a garden? Here are a few tips for how to plan a vegetable garden at home.

How to Plan a Vegetable Garden

Vegetable gardening was our choice of garden when it came to planning a garden last year. We went with a container garden last year but this year we’re going to try for a raised bed in addition to the large containers. We’ll see how it goes, of course, and I will be sure to share our progress. Last year I fell behind with documenting everything, and well.. there wasn’t too much to document by the time all was said and done. I learned a few things and hopefully I won’t repeat the same mistakes. This year will be different because I’m actually going to plan a vegetable garden this year instead of just trying to wing it. Have you heard of leaky gut syndrome and it's possible connection to autism? How do you even begin to treat leaky gut syndrome?

Leaky Gut Syndrome and Autism

Have you ever heard of leaky gut syndrome? Or maybe you’ve heard of the possible connection between leaky gut syndrome and autism and you’re wondering- just what is leaky gut syndrome. I’ve been there. In that almost exact sequence- plugging into trusty Google “leaky gut syndrome and autism” Maybe it was one night reading about possible causes of autism or possible treatments for autism; I’m really not sure how it all came about. I just remember seeing the term and wondering just what the heck it was and how it could possibly be related to my daughter’s autism. Sure, I’d seen quite a bit of research done on gluten and how eliminating gluten and casein from the diet helped. But beyond that I hadn’t looked….

In search of a delicious breakfast idea? Try this easy baked chocolate French toast.

Baked Chocolate French Toast

I love French toast though I don’t make it too often. It’s not that it’s too much of a process, just that I don’t always feel like standing in front of the stove and babysitting my breakfast. Recently though, I discovered a few recipes for baked French toast. My interest was peaked because it looked like the ideal way to make it. So, I decided to try it with chocolate milk and ended up with an easy baked chocolate French toast recipe. Next time I do this, I’ll probably try a different bread but I just wanted to use what we had on hand. I may also adjust the amount of cinnamon that I used, but for the most part- this is definitely a keeper….
