Childproofing Your Home: How to Safeguard Your Baby From Poisons?

Sharing is caring!

Having a child is a blessing for every parent. You can’t explain your feelings in words. Still, it won’t be wrong to say that parenting is tough. Why? As children right from birth are naturally curious. So, they love exploring around, especially young children, by putting items in their mouths. While this might seem cute, this nature might be dangerous on many occasions.

This is why you must take extra precautions to protect your child. Only then can you make sure that harmful items are not in their reach at all. In this article, we’ve listed different things to help you safeguard your child from potential poisons.

Let’s get started!

  • Cleaning Products: Whether it’s an all-purpose cleaner, bleach, laundry detergent, or dishwashing detergent, even a tiny amount can cause severe breathing or digestive issues.

Let’s not forget these packets dissolve when they come in contact with a liquid, saliva, or wet hands. Hence, you must forbid your children from playing or handling those packets. You must seal the box/ container or start using child-resistant packaging to keep these products out of reach of your children.

  • Personal or Hygiene Products: This includes nail polish removers, cosmetics, mouthwash, or perfumes. This category also includes gasoline, insecticides, OTC drugs, and vitamins supplements. You must ensure that you purchase and keep these items in their original container. Or, if that’s not available, seal them inside a child-resistant packaging.
  • Small Objects: These include beads, buttons, pins, refrigerator magnets, screws, and other loose objects. To avoid your children gulping these objects, you must check your floors regularly. Also, ensure that battery covers on remote controls and musical toys are secure.

Besides these items, some more articles might be dangerous to babies and young children. For instance, nicotine (e-cigarettes) can be extremely dangerous and fatal for a child. So, keep it out of sight of children.

Another item that can be highly poisonous to a child is Alcohol. So, you must always empty unfinished drinks to avoid any complications. Further, let’s not forget that children can even get into trash containers. So, ensure to keep it out of the child’s reach.

Also, some house plants might be harmful to children if they get ahold of them. You can google the list of plants that you must avoid. You can do without houseplants for some time. If you still want them, keep them out of reach of houseplants.

Wrapping Up

Remember, most cases happen when you are not paying attention. So, keep the products in their original packaging or child-proof packaging. You must store them in locked cabinets and containers. Further, you must install a safety latch that will further seal the doors that are accessible to children.

In case there is a mishap, be calm. Take away the item from your child. And if the product is still in the child’s mouth, try and get it out or remove it using your fingers. You must keep the product with you to determine what your child swallowed.

Call 911 right away if your child isn’t breathing or having seizures. But make sure to avoid this in the first place.
