You may look around one day and realize that your home could use some attention inside and out. Instead of dealing with the hassle and expense of moving, consider investing time, money, and energy into improving your property.

It’s an especially good idea if you enjoy your location and neighborhood and have the motivation required to make your home a better place to live. There are some projects you can tackle yourself and others that you may want to hire external help to complete. Before diving in, review some advice that will help you create your dream home.

Clean & Declutter Regularly

Your home will be a more enjoyable place to live when you keep it clean and clutter-free. It’s a chance to remove dirt and grime and be on the lookout for any unwanted pests. You can always make your own cleaning supplies if you want to avoid using harsh chemicals in your home. Get on a regular cleaning schedule and go room by room making these spaces more inviting. It’s a good idea to perform a deep clean with the change of seasons and to pick up, sweep, and wipe down countertops each night before bed. If you work on decluttering your home you can also create and save space in your property. Unpack boxes, go through closets and cupboards and decorate with a minimalist style in mind. Now is your chance to determine what you want to keep and donate or get rid of to make more room for the items you use and love.

Boost the Curb Appeal

As a homeowner, you should also pay attention to the exterior of your property. It’s an opportunity to set a more positive tone in your neighborhood and increase the value of your home. For example, you can better protect your home and make it more visually appealing by installing a new roof. In this case, you’ll want to work with a trusted and experienced roofing contractor who will use high-quality materials and get the project done in a timely fashion. You should also work on cleaning up your landscaping and planting some new shrubs and bushes. Decorate your front porch and consider putting some flower boxes in your windows.

Update the Kitchen & Bathrooms

Some of the most important rooms in your home are the kitchen and bathrooms. You will get a return on your investment by putting money into updating these spaces. You want your kitchen to be functional and beautiful and a place where you can enjoy cooking meals and visiting with family members. Add countertop space and storage by installing a large island in the center of the room. If your cabinets are in good shape but could use a refresh then paint them a new color and switch out the hardware for something more modern. As for the bathrooms, paint or replace old vanities and put in new tapware. Hang up some round mirrors and place wall sconces on either side to enhance the lighting. If you require more storage space in your kitchen or bathrooms then think about going vertical and putting in some floating shelves.

Enhance the Security

You want to feel safe and sound when spending time in your home. Create your dream home by ensuring that the security is up to par. Consider installing security cameras and motion-sensored lights on the outside. You can add security and privacy by putting in a gate or fence as well. You can also keep an eye on activity outside your front door by installing a video doorbell. On the inside, you should check all the locks on your windows and doors and replace them if necessary. If you’re a pet lover then you may want to consider getting a dog which can help you feel safer.

Improve the Lighting

You want your home to be welcoming and well-lit. Therefore, it’s a good idea to focus on improving the lighting. Maximize the amount of natural light by washing your windows and drawing back curtains and blinds in the daytime hours. If you have the budget you may also want to install a skylight in an upstairs bathroom or add a sunroom onto your home. Be sure to have plenty of lighting solutions throughout your home and layer your lighting for the best outcome. Use a mix of lighting types such as ambient, task, and accent, and include lamps and candles in your rooms that you can turn on and light in the evening hours. As for the outside, think about putting solar lights alongside pathways and walkways and adding a spotlight to a tree out front. Better lighting will not only help make your home more attractive but can also boost your mood.

Install New Flooring

Another piece of advice to help you create your dream home is to install new flooring. It’s an especially good idea if you have stained and old carpet. Dated carpet can be a real eye-sore and decrease the value of your home. Do your homework to research different flooring types and select one based on your budget and your personal preferences. If you want something that’s beautiful, easy-to-maintain, and durable then you may want to choose luxury vinyl planks. They are a great option if you have kids and pets running around. If you go with hard flooring then you can always warm up your spaces and add texture by laying down some colorful area rugs.

Paint & Redecorate

Now is also a good time to think about applying a fresh coat of paint to the walls. It’s a simple, cost-effective, and smart way to instantly make your home appear more modern and brighter if you go with a neutral palette. If you like bold colors then use them sparingly in areas such as the dining room or a small bathroom. Bring home some paint samples and put them on the walls first to see what they look like in different lighting. If you have wood trim then you may want to consider painting it white for a more contemporary look and feel. Once the painting is complete then you can work on redecorating. Take the time to rearrange furniture, hang some artwork and curtains, and place a couple of plants throughout your home. Cozy up your spaces with rugs, pillows, and throws.

Design A Relaxing Bedroom

It’s important that you get plenty of quality sleep each night if you want to wake up feeling your best. Therefore, another essential room in your home is the bedroom space. You want to be put at ease the minute you step foot in this area. Put a soothing color of paint on the walls, keep the room clean and tidy, and invest in a comfortable mattress and bedding. If you have the space you may also want to set up a meditation area or reading nook. Make sure that you include calming scents, and natural elements like plants, and keep the clutter to a minimum. You’ll want to have comfortable furniture and soft lighting such as lamps on the bedside tables.

Focus on the Backyard

When the weather cooperates you’ll want to be enjoying it outside in your backyard. Create your dream home by putting some time and energy into improving the backyard. Set up an outdoor oasis with a grilling and lounge area and hang some string lights. Power wash your deck or patio to make it look brand new and outline it with some attractive plants and flowers. If you want additional shade then you can always consider installing a pergola. Add a water feature such as a pond or fountain to make the area more calming and invest in a fire pit that you can use during evening gatherings. Be proactive about maintaining your lawn and picking up any loose sticks or tree branches.

Finish the Basement

If you want to create your dream home then add more living space. One option is to invest in finishing the basement. It will be nice to have this extra room to maneuver around in and will add value to your home. There are many options for transforming this space depending on your needs. For example, you can use it as an entertainment center to watch movies and sports and play games such as pool. If you have kids then you may want to use your basement as a playroom which will be great to have especially in the winter months. If you have limited bedrooms in your home then you can set it up as a guest bedroom where visitors can stay.

Set Up A Home Office

You may find yourself working from home full-time or part-time these days. You want to have a separate and private area where you can focus and be productive. Every dream home needs an attractive home office to utilize. Choose a space that has a door you can shut and that gets some natural light. Decorate your home office with a fresh coat of paint, artwork, and some fresh flowers. Make sure you have plenty of storage solutions so you can keep the room well-organized and minimize distractions.
