Sharing is caring!

If you have a family, it can be often be difficult to figure out how to arrange your outdoor space. Should you make it an adults-only zone with decking, delicate plants and a dream BBQ set-up? Or should you add a paddling pool and swingset for your kids? It can be difficult to work out what to do, but here are some tips that will help you make sure that your whole family enjoys your outdoor space.

3 Ways that Your Entire Family Can Enjoy Your Outdoor Space

What Does Everyone Want From The Space?

When it comes to redesigning an area of your home, it’s important to make sure that everyone gets involved and that you hear ideas from the whole family. If you’re starting off with a blank slate, you should ask everybody how they want to be able to use your outdoor space. Maybe your partner wants to be able to have lots of family BBQs, maybe your kids want space to sit outside and read, maybe you’re starting to discover your own latent interest for gardening. Make sure that you take ideas from everybody so that no one feels left out. For your kids who may not be neurotypical, take their needs into consideration too – a cool, shady, quiet spot in the corner of your yard may be the exact thing that your kid with autism will relish.

Teach Your Kids How To Garden

One of the best ways to create your ideal family outdoor space is to work on it together, so why not teach your kids how to garden? If you don’t feel that it’s a strength of yours personally, you could work on it together as a family. Take a look online to work out what plants should be planted at what time of year and the techniques required to do so – and why not investigate planting fruits and vegetables in your garden too? Fruit trees like apple and pear trees might take a long time to grow into maturity, but it’s a way to contribute to the goodness of the world in your own space. You could also plant tomatoes, raspberries and strawberries – they’re all pretty easy to grow and will make for some excellent snacks in the future.

Create Projects Together

If you’re considering a big back yard project, make it a family project. If you want to build some decking, you don’t need to hire a fancy company to do it – check out a ute hire company so you can rent a large vehicle to transport materials home from the store. If decking seems like a project that’s a little too big for you, enlist your family to help you with smaller ideas. You could put together and paint a bird house or a bird feeder, and there’s a lot of joy to be taken from watching the birds enjoy it. In the summer, it feels particularly great to fill a bird bath with water and watch them enjoy themselves!

Go For Multi-Purpose Items

Finally, why not go for items that have more than one purpose? If you like to eat outside, go for comfortable chairs that can be put around a table and that your bookworm kids can laze on during the day. Ensure that the items you put outside aren’t breakable – steer away from glass! – and that they can be recycled in the future, so plastics are also out of the question. Metal lanterns look pretty during the day but at night they can provide lighting for family board games out on the terrace.

Your back yard can be a family effort – these tips should help you enjoy your space in no time.
