Sharing is caring!

A new home may be new to you, but unless you’re buying a new build, your home won’t be completely brand new. And it’s also rare that you’ll completely love it as it is, so some changes are sure to be on the horizon. You don’t have to completely strip your home to the foundations to make some changes; there are many upgrades you can make that will make your home feel less like someone else’s and a little more like yours. And even if you do them bit by bit, you can enjoy working towards your dream home.

Here are 8 upgrades that will lift your home and give it a fresh new look.

1. Install new flooring

Some fresh flooring can really make a difference to your home. Nothing beats new carpet or some stylish wooden floors. Adding some new floors will be the first step in making your home feel more like yours, and you don’t have to do every room at once – you can simply work through each room when you’re ready.

If your home has wooden floors, you may be able to restore them and give them a brand new look. You could even change the varnish to create a different tone that’s more in line with your taste.

2. Change your doors

New doors will also make a big difference to your home. Doors are no longer just a functional feature; they can bring detail to your space, and of course, add some light too. Changing your doors for something more modern is a really simple upgrade, and one that will really lift your home’s aesthetic.

Luckily, you can find a range of doors online and in stores, and then bring in door installation services to fit them. You may need to cut your doors to size, so it’s best to hire an expert to make sure it’s done properly.

3. Repaint your walls and ceilings

Everyone’s personal style is different, and that’s especially true when it comes to home decor! One of the first things people do when they move into a new home is paint, which can help make things feel fresh and more personal, while getting rid of any big elements you don’t like. A full refresh of your walls and ceilings will get rid of any marks and fading left by the previous owners, and will instantly brighten up your home.

If you’re not ready to commit to color schemes yet, you could just give everything a fresh white coat, buying you some time to decide once you’ve got a better feel of your home and what you want to do with it.

4. Create more space

Many people choose to change their home’s layout after moving in, seeing the potential to open up spaces and create something new. There are several ways you can transform your home, and one of the most common is by knocking down some walls and opening up spaces. If you want an open plan living space or want to merge two bedrooms to create a larger one, this can be a simpler way to do it than extending your home.

You’ll need to check the plans for your home to ensure any structural changes can be done safely, without damaging your home’s integrity.

5. Build in more storage

Adding more storage to your home is a great idea. It will help keep your new home from feeling cluttered, and it will help it look more modern too. From built-in closets to media units and under-stairs storage, you can make the most of your home’s little corners.

While having storage is a useful addition to your home, it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t keep on top of the clutter. Start life in your new home with some new habits to avoid filling it with stuff you don’t want or need – it will make it far easier to maintain your home.

6. Refresh your kitchen

Kitchens have a long life, but they can still feel dated, especially if the choices aren’t ones you would make. But a kitchen remodel can be expensive, and may not be your priority when you first move in. Luckily, there are several solutions to help you refresh your kitchen without a complete makeover.

Many people upgrade their kitchen cabinets with some new paint or coatings that give them a new lease of life. You could also cover or replace your counters to give your kitchen a simple upgrade without changing it completely.

7. Clean up your bathroom

A clean, fresh bathroom can really make a difference to your home – nobody wants to live somewhere with a dirty bathroom. The first thing you should do is give the bathroom a deep clean. There are mold-banishing products you can use to tackle black spots, and leave your bathroom looking much better as a result.

If you need to get more hands-on, you could consider re-grouting your tiles and resealing key areas like your shower and windows. Another simple and affordable way to update your bathroom is to add new cabinets and mirrors, and change fixtures like your faucets, towel holders and radiators.

8. Install new light fittings

Finally, let there be light! Many homeowners leave light fittings when they move out, and if the ones left behind are not to your liking, then you should change them! From statement lights to classic styles, you’ll be sure to find fittings you like at a price you can afford. Many light fittings can be installed yourself, making it easy to update this element of your home.

When your home has been lived in before, you can feel like a stranger in it for quite some time. Making changes to style it as you want can take time, but there are some small upgrades you can make to get the ball rolling. Focus on the upgrades you can make that will lift your home and give it that new-home feeling. Before you know it, your home will be styled to your liking, making it feel more like your own.
