Sharing is caring!

You’ve outgrown your house or apartment, and it’s time to head on up the property ladder. But first, you need to prepare your kids for the move! This is definitely more difficult than packing away your own belongings; after all, these aren’t just some cardboard boxes that you can tip into the back of a van. These are your kids, and their lives will change forever as a result of moving home.

So how do you prepare for this big step in your life? Here we have gathered three helpful tips to ensure that the process goes as smoothly as possible:

Get Them Involved In The Process Of Selling Your Old House

Selling a house is no easy task, and it’s even harder when you don’t have any help! Make sure that your kids are involved with this part of the moving process; not only will they get to know their way around your old property better, but they’ll also feel more invested in the sale.

Invite them to choose the furniture that should stay versus go, and let them paint (or draw) on the walls of their old rooms for one last time. This will make your little ones feel like they’re saying goodbye in style!

And if you’re not even sure about leaving yet? Teach them how to take care of the lawn so they can keep it looking great until you finally make up your mind.

Mentally Prepare Your Children For The Move Early On

Start talking about your plans to move house long before you actually pack up and leave – this will help your kids understand that this is a normal part of life and not just some big permanent change that has come out of the blue, especially with interstate moving.

Explain to them what moving house means for them personally – it could be anything from being closer to their grandparents to having extra bedrooms they can paint their favorite colors in. This way, they’ll be able to prepare for the changes in advance.

If you can, try and involve them with your plans for decorating the new house, too! This will get them thinking about where their bedrooms will be and what they could look like (and it’ll take their minds off the fact that they’re leaving all of their toys behind!).

And don’t forget to include them in the decision-making process. If you’re not sure about a particular design choice, ask for their input!

Make Sure They Have Easy Access To Many Amenities In The New House

As adults, we certainly wouldn’t be pleased if we had to clean up after ourselves in new bathrooms or kitchens that we’re not used to – so don’t expect your kids to be happy about it!

If there are any facilities in the new house that they will need on a day-to-day basis, make sure you show them where they are and how to use them. This includes appliances like washing machines, dryers, and even the dishwasher, as well as light switches and door handles.

They need to feel like it’s their home, too!

In Closing

Preparing your kids for a move is not an easy task, but it can make the transition that much easier. Just follow these three tips to ensure that the process goes as smoothly as possible!
