Welcome back to another edition of Baby Steps to Blogging! After sharing my June goals with you last week, this week we’re back to talking about how to increase traffic with social media. Today we’re going talk about how bloggers can use StumbleUpon to increase traffic. StumbleUpon, for me, can be very touch and go when it comes to traffic but when it’s on- it’s usually my top referral for social media.
One of the first things that you’ll want to do is sign up for an account on Stumbleupon:
As you can see here, I’m justamom2582 on Stumbleupon and you’re looking at a few of my likes.
Next, I would recommend installing a toolbar extension for Stumbleupon.
Above shows the extension for Firefox
And here’s the extension for Chrome.
For me it depends on which browser is behaving better that day.
The general rule that I use for StumbleUpon is to use a 20:1 ratio or for every 20 posts that you stumble/submit, submit one of your own. The easy way to do this is by using the browser extension. All you have to do when you visit a website, is just hit the thumbs up and it’s added to your likes.
Another option is to use the StumbleUpon button in social media sharing tools. I always try to make this an option for sharing.
To me, StumbleUpon is a very visual tool though it really does depend on the type of post that I submit when it comes to getting traffic.
So how can bloggers use StumbleUpon to increase traffic? You can do this independently by going to your favorite blogs and using the toolbar extension or social media buttons. Or you can participate in social sharing groups. Some large groups include a daily StumbleUpon thread and there are also groups that are dedicated just to StumbleUpon.
StumbleUpon can be a reliable source of traffic, if you work it properly. Don’t count it out when it comes to building a social media presence for your blog.
